Specialist Careers advisers support students and parents to explore the options available to them at key stages in their education, years 11 and year 14. All students from years 9 through to year 14 will have access to 1:1 Guidance which will support the students to investigate their skills and strengths and to explore the world of work. The sessions are individualised to meet a student’s needs using different forms of communication such as verbal, picture exchange and observations in class. All students in years 9 to 14 will have a Career Action Plan which is a detailed record of the interview that this taken place and the options available. This is reviewed and updated every year.
We will also meet with parents and carers to make sure they are fully informed about the options available at the end of year 11 and year 14. Meetings can be held in school or in the community.
We provide group sessions to the students in years 9 to 14 which help them to explore their skill base. We offer sessions such as job bag, looking at different job roles and exploring the skills needed for the role, interview technique workshops, helping students to understand what a job or college interview will involve and All about me which helps students to identify their personal skills and qualities and how these match to the world of work.
Understanding the post 16 and 19 options can be challenging and part of our role in school is to arrange visits to FE colleges, training providers and employers so students can explore what the options are really like. We organise taster days for both groups and individuals. We also support parent/carers to visit local providers so they too are aware of the options and choices and can discuss how their son/daughter would be supported in a new provision. We offer support with application forms, support over the summer period should concerns arise and advice on how to apply for transport.
Transition is always the main concern of both students, parents/carers and our role fully supports the transition process. Once a destination has been confirmed we will support and organise a series of transition days which will allow the student the opportunity to meet those who will be both supporting and teaching them in their new education setting. For those leaving education we will support that transition into social care provision if necessary.
Throughout the students time at Welburn we will attend the EHCP reviews from years 9 to 14 and provide information via the Career Action Plan and input into the Preparation for Adulthood part of the EHCP. We are available to give information, advice and guidance at parent’s evenings and offer support at the schools Moving On Event.
