Headteacher’ s message: Christmas 2018

Well, it’s the last week of a very long term but what an amazing term it has been. It started with the excellent results achieved by our Year 11 and College students! In terms of year on year progress, our students are making outstanding progress in College and 2018 leavers have really ‘set the bar’ for this year’s!

We had the most amazing visit from Princess Anne. It was a truly uplifting experience for all of us, but especially the students. Princess Anne spent all her time with the students and didn’t once sit down! She was visiting because the RDA had invited her to open our new arena. I must pay special tribute to Elspeth Crookenden, without whom the event would simply not have happened. Elspeth works tirelessly, along with her army of ladies on the RDA, who once a week, give up their time and their ponies! We are so blessed to have such dedicated volunteers at Welburn. Many children benefit from the riding on a Thursday afternoon and it gives the children lots of opportunities for development such as persevering when things get tough, learning new skills on the ponies, posture and balance control and communication. Thank you so much to Elspeth and the RDA for all their work.

Thanks to Rev Sue Binks as well for all the assemblies and support, we even had Arch Bishop Sentamu back last week to see the work of the school in action. He saw some excellent work going on in tutor groups, in ‘sensory circuits’, in the Farm and in Food Tech. All of this is part of our ‘Life Skills’ programme on a Friday morning. I know Rev Sue will be leading the Christingle Service this week too and we are very grateful for her giving up her time to come into school!

We have an excellent Student Council and welcomed the new Head Boy and Head Girl last Wednesday to a full governing body meeting. The students were fantastic ambassadors, articulating very clearly that we need more play equipment in the playground and an indoor gym for the residential students! Thank you to Caroline Barker and all staff involved!

The Care Team are expecting their annual Ofsted inspection at any time in January. We hope to retain our overall grade of ‘Good’. There has been an enormous amount of work done including engaging students in surveys, to find out what they want and need to make boarding an even more fulfilling experience!

The staffing structure has bedded in; we are working closely with NYCC to try to avoid any further cuts to staffing and I want to thank all parents who have approached me and asked to help. Please keep responding to the consultations and make your voice heard! Thank you to all staff for the constant dedication and positive attitude and ‘going the extra mile’ for the students; none of the development would be possible without everyone working hard together as a team!

Last but not least, Happy Christmas to all our students and their families. You’ve worked so hard this term in lessons; I hope 2019 is another happy year at Welburn and for all of us!

Best wishes

Marianne
