PE and Sport

Our Commitment to Sport within the Curriculum

In 2015 and again in 2016, Welburn Hall School was awarded the School Games Gold Award.

This prestigious award recognises that we are committed to developing competitive opportunities across the school as well as promoting extra-curricular physical activity.

By receiving a gold level award we have been recognised as offering a high amount of competitive opportunities in a variety of sports at all levels of the School Games. We have also been identified as giving all students the opportunity to be physically active during extra-curricular time and we have high levels of Sporting leadership opportunities for our students.

The Values of the School Games at Welburn Hall

We heartily and enthusiastically embrace these values for all sport, in both PE lessons and in after-school clubs.

  • Determination  -  Keep going, no matter what
  • Passion -  Giving it 100%
  • Respect -  Treating others politely and with understanding
  • Honesty - Be honest with others and with yourself
  • Self Belief -  You've got to believe to achieve
  • Teamwork - Treating everyone equally

Sports Special SSP Partnership

Sport at Welburn Hall is supported  by the SSP Partnership. Established in September 2006, the Sports Special School Sports Partnership consists of all 19 special schools from across North Yorkshire.

Being the only partnership of its kind in the country, the partnership prides itself on it's unique approach to engaging special schools.

In addition to working specifically with all 19 special schools, the partnership is continuously impacting upon mainstream SEN provision, promoting inclusive activity and increasing opportunities for those who struggle to access mainstream provision fully.

Latest Sporting News

During the summer term a team of college first years took part in a multi skills challenge. It was a great opportunity to try new activities such as rock climbing and also to mix with other schools and sports leaders in the area.

Boys and girls from upper key stage three and lower four represented the school in an inter school football tournament run by York City coaching staff. They played an exhausting five matches but lost to Mowbray, the eventual title winners for this year. This was the first time some of our young people had attended an inter school sporting event and they were all excellent ambassadors for Welburn Hall school.

We have been lucky enough to have six weeks of dance sessions which were secured through the sports partnership. All of our students really benefitted from these highly enjoyable lessons. Many thanks to Amy for taking charge and to all of the TA’s who joined in.

Trampoline/Rebound Therapy

Along with the dance sessions, the focus for the first part of the autumn term has been on trampoline awards and rebound therapy delivered on the trampoline for our less mobile students. Some excellent work has been done by our college students when working with and supporting key stage three pupils.

Indoor Athletics

Welburn Hall are the sports partnership inter schools champions for both boys and girls indoor athletics events! The college entered the post 16 competitions and excelled in all running, jumping and throwing events. Well done to everyone involved.
